Owen can play with the rattle if I put it into his hand. He can bring it to his mouth and bring the other hand over it. His head is more and more stable on his neck and he still loves “standing”. He can flip from front to back and from back to side. He is getting more and more interested in his big brother. He laughs any time he gets his diaper changed or, really, any time he is naked. He loves taking baths and splashes with gusto.

We took Trevor for a walk in the Stony Swamp yesterday. He had lots of fun throwing snow balls and playing with sticks. He learned to recognise birch trees and beaver “bites”. We saw a lot of chickadees. At home Trevor is starting to draw more.

Trevor has been asleep since he came back from daycare. Whenever Anaj, the other three year old is there, Trev gets so exhausted he falls asleep in the car and sleeps pretty much until the next morning. He might wake up to have some milk and watch Thomas, but that’s about it.

When he is awake, Trevor tends to get really into whatever he is doing. His latest favourite toys are measuring cups and spoons. He will hold measuring cup and babble something along the lines “Here is milk, I am making gris.” I let him have some water in the measuring cups in the kitchen and he spilled most of it though he got a bit of play done.

Trevor has given Owen a house name – Mala Kuka. Mala means small, and we’re not sure what Kuka is, but since daddy and mommy are Big Kuka and Trevor himself is Kuka, we think it means cutie.

Owen is growing quite nicely. He has grown out of some of his onesies and toesies already. He will grab objects if they are put in his hand. He is talking up a storm and still smiles the sweetest smiles. Unlike his brother at this age, he loves getting his diaper changed. He smiles like mad when I put him on the change table (bathroom counter, I found that this is the most convenient place in the house to change the diaper). Owen’s eyes are now very blue though they were very dark until recently. Yesterday I discovered that he really likes to pretend that he is walking. I hold him under his arms and he supports himself with one foot and moves the other forward. His neck is getting stronger.

Despite being an expert paper rocket launcher, railwayway tycoon and starfish swimmer, Trevor insists that he is still my little baby.

Over the last two months Trevor has picked up quite a bit of Croatian. He uses “mala” for “small” and “slon” for “elephant”. He still speaks English and adds Croatian words into it. He got mad at his dad when he did not cut the food after nicely being asked to “reza that”. Much like me, Trevor is having trouble with thes and as. When he wants to go to the store (ducan) he tells me he wants to go to “the chan”. In English, he is working very hard to figure out the plurals, but it is still treeses for trees. The other day he was eating his food and realised that he has made a shape of a hand in his cereal. He said “I’ve made a hand, here’s thumbses”.

Owen is growing and liking his brother more and more (though right now he is crying because Trev bumped into him). He is smiling a lot and making cooing noises.

Trev is in the “What?” phase. Anytime we ask or tell him anything that is not entirely to his liking he replies with “What?” to which we repeat our demand only to hear another “What?” and so ad infinitum. Here is a sample conversation:
“I am a goalie, shoot a puck at me. I got a penalty, I am going to go into the penalty box now.”
“Goalies don’t go into the penalty box, if they get a fault, another player will serve the penalty time.”
“What?”
“If you are a goalie you will not get to sit in the penalty box.”
“What?”
“Goalies don’t go in the penalty box.”
“Goalies don’t go in the penalty box?”
“No.”
“What?”
Meanwhile, in another part of the room, Owen is giggling madly.

Trevor was never too keen on taking a bath. When he was a baby he would scream pretty much all the way through. Though he likes playing with water, even recently the only way for me to wash him was to splash him with water from a bucket. Recently two events changed his attitude towards bath. One was us starting to bathe him at the same time as Owen and the other was us going to the swimming pool. We started him with swimming lessons and have been taking him to the swimming pool couple a times a week. He doesn’t care about the lessons but he loves the water.

Trev also loves Cokolino, his little brother, making mighty machines by connecting his megablocks trucks with elastic bands, making fussy faces, retelling the picture books stories to no-one in particular and not taking naps.
Meanwhile, Owen is smiling and looking at us really cutely.

Owen now weighs more than 4.5 kg. He has a stuffy nose but is otherwise doing well. He is quite fond of toys and rattles and can keep interest on the playmat for a while.

(This lovely picture has been taken by Dan)
We took Trevor to his swimming lessons today. As usual, he did not care for the lessons, but he had a great time at the pool. At first he did not even want to go anywhere near the water, but eventually he decided he really liked the shallow end.
Yesterday he got his helmet and stick back from the “penalty box” so he went skating, much to the appreciation of the kids in gym class who are his #1 fans. The day before we went sledding (jumping around in deep snow, really) and that was fun too.

I am getting to know Owen a bit more. He likes to look around and is not much of a cryer. In fact, as long as you keep playing with him just the way he wants it, he will not cry at all. Even when he is hungry he gives us a few “Ahem” style coughs before he launches into a “Am I going to starve here??? seriously people !!!” cry.
There seem to be definite benefits to being the second child. We are much more competent parents now and are able to get organised much better. I have so far managed to come up with little tricks to make night sleep go smoother (so far, watch it change tomorrow…). The interesting thing is that tricks that worked with Trevor don’t work with Owen. For Trevor I would stroke the back of the neck while feeding and he would eat more, Owen could not care less. Moving his back makes him eat a bit more but not much, and nothing, nothing, nothing can stop him from falling asleep in the middle of the meal. I have also learned pretty quickly not to attempt to change his diaper between 2AM and 5:30AM if I have any hope of sleeping that night.
Owen is spending more and more time alert. When he is alert, he likes me to lift him up and down and talk to him. He does not mind if we attach a rattle to his hand (Trevor would go feral if we did that) but he is not responsible if the rattle, or anything within a meter radius, gets spit-up on it.

Trevor is enjoying his little brother quite a bit. He loves holding and playing with him. He will often bring him toys (but take them away as well). He has been play acting around the house quite a bit lately particularly with small blocks he calls “guys”. The little blocks interact and even go to school. After we put him to bed he can sing for up to an hour. The latest addition to his repertoire is Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” which in Trevor’s rendition goes something like this “Ring ring ring of fire, car car car truck….”. Most of the songs we can’t quite figure out what they are but most are about mommy and daddy so we are pleased anyway.
We have been having trouble getting Trevor to eat so Chris started telling him how he needs to eat in order to be big and strong like Mike Fisher. Trev took this seriously because, after he finished his meal, he picked up his cell phone and told Mike Fisher that he has finished his supper. Then, yesterday, while he was out on the skating rink in the park there was an elementary school gym class going on. He went to join the kids in the circle they made and the teacher asked him how old he is. As far as I know, he has no idea how old he is so he said “I am going to be big like Mike Fisher!”

I have only a few minutes to write this post. Today both boys fell asleep at the same time and stayed asleep for about two hours. However, by the time I got everything I needed to get done done, including uploading the latest photos, they were both up and ready to be played with.

Trev fell asleep in a box. It is lucky he did fall asleep, because he is skipping his afternoon nap more and more to the detriment of his late afternoon mood. In any case, he was sitting in the box for about 15 minutes sheepishly watching me until he started falling inside of the box more and more until he fell asleep. He had his skates in the box with him, though he did take the trouble of taking them off his feet first. He has been wearing them around the house for about two days now.
Owen gained a kilo since coming back from the hospital. He is spending more time awake. He has to work on this as Trevor was already asking if Owen can play hockey with him.

Trevor has been at home with me for the last little while and we’re having lots of fun playing with his blocks. The latest craze is to make hockey rink or soccer field and play with the ball inside of it. Today the new addition to the game were the goal posts. The weekend Owen was born, Trevor caught a cold that eventually spread to the whole family. It wasn’t a bad cold, but it is taking a long time to get rid of it. Because of our runny noses with combination of really cold weather outside we have been a bit house locked. We did manage to go out a couple of times. Once Trevor gets outside, we can’t get him back in. He loves playing with snow chunks and making snow angels.

Owen has been doing well too. He took a bit of a hit with the cold and one day he did not gain much weight (we are doing newborn weight loss study for the hospital so we were weighing him every day). However, the next day he went into cluster feed mode and made up the difference. At night he wakes up every two and a half hours though he has been known to sleep up to four or five hours at the time.
