Meah and Yeah

I was really looking forward to Dan and Maria’s party tonight even if we were just going for a couple of hours. However, Trevor has been borderline cranky today and only had two very short naps so we were relieved that he fell asleep at 7:30. But that means no party for me. Duh!

We have some champagne in the fridge and we’ll just have to snuggle up and enjoy our first New Year as parents being responsible parents.

Happy New Year to all!

Happy Trevor

Film – Atonement

I got a new cell phone. I am still figuring it out – answering machine is not set up yet, though I am starting to build up my mp3 collection. I’ve been trying to send photos and I got one sent to Luisa, but she had to go to a web page to see it rather than just receiving it on her phone. Also, I suspect that photos might be more expensive than messages which is too bad – photo taken at the right moment can tell so much. Here are some photos from today.

We tried to take one with Dan, but Trevor was getting cranky. I guess we will just have to get Dan to photo-shop himself in one of these pictures.

Film – The Kite Runner

Our Christmas dinner went really well. I bought turkey too large for anyone’s good, but Chris baked it to perfection on first try. My mom arrived the day before Christmas and is staying for a week and Chris’ clan got here around 2. They helped finish up the meal so it was a really good team effort. I really enjoyed having the dinner here. Usually we dine and run because we don’t like driving back to Ottawa late, but since we were home, there was no rush and the whole thing lasted much longer than usual.

Group picture (Carol’s at the camera) – Trevor had just woken up which is why he is wearing his pajamas and not his “formal” suit that we bought for taking Christmas pictures in.

I got a cell phone which I am still figuring out how to use. I am not promising that I will carry it around with me, but I will have it with me occasionally. Trevor got his weight worth of Megablocks. He still prefers to chew on our portable phone. He also got a “classic” rotary phone toy that we hope will replace our regular phone in his affections.

Christmas preparations

I am supposed to make six dozen cookies for my mom&baby cookie exchange tomorrow. I am very nervous about this so I will make a new type and an old type to fall back on in case the new ones are awful.

The inside of my house is decorated. I put a wreath on the front door but didn’t put any lights outside. This turned out to be a good idea since we’re getting the shingles replaced on the top floor of my house right now. When it is all done, the spanking new shingles will shine so bright in the moonlight, I won’t need lights.

I haven’t sent out my cards yet, I really have to get going with this. We’re doing the Christmas lunch this year, but I haven’t started worrying about that yet. I guess I should order a turkey…

I am so happy about the snow. It paralyzed the city and broke Chris’ car, but when I went to see the shingles from the front yard, I fell in thigh deep and it was great.

Books – “Pricaj mi o njoj” and “Atonement”

Bojnberry.ca has been down a bit too often lately so we’re looking for a new service provider. This one has been great, if for no other reason than that it was free, but it seems like its time has passed.

I’ve been reading a lot lately, partially while feeding Trevor, partially while watching him. Trev is at the stage now when he prefers to play with toys and ignores us, so I usually have an hour or so of quiet time per day.

I’ve finished “Pri?aj mi o njoj” (Tell me about her) by Renato Bareti? after months of reading it. I started reading it in the last weeks of pregnancy and it was my default book to take to the non stress test appointments. Then I’ve misplaced it and read some other books in the mean time.

Overall, I really enjoyed it though it is not as good as Bareti?’s previous novel “Osmi povjerenik” (The eight commissioner). The topic is somewhat more serious as it deals with the aftermath of war. There is plenty of humour in it and it is well written. Bareti? loves playing with dialects, which adds a nice touch to his work. In “Osmi povjerenik” he went as far as making up an entire language. The problem in “Pri?aj mi o njoj” is that he went too far, or at least that’s how it seemed to me. One of the leading characters talks in Split dialect with slang which is fine, but she cuts her verbs which seems unlikely given her education. I just can’t picture a successful journalist saying “Let’s go swimmin’ without intentionally, rather than casually, cutting off the g. Similar thing happens with the main character’s daughter. She is a ten year old straight A student who grew up with her lawyer and radio announcer parents in Slavonia (opposite side of the country from Dalmacia) and yet, in a year that she has lived in Split she has picked up the most ridiculous illiterate maritime drawl. I remember being her age and dissing ? and ?, but I could and did conjugate (and I wasnt a straight A student either). Then again, it has been a while since I spent serious time in Croatia. Maybe people really do talk like that. In any case, Bareti? is a very promising author and I hope he keeps publishing novels at par or better than the first two.

Ive also just finished Atonement by Ian McEwan. I was a bit reluctant to pick it up having a strange prejudice against books from the first three display piles at Chapters. However, since I read Pamuks My Name is Red, Ive softened this view a bit. I really liked Atonement. The writing style was quite intriguing and the little twists and turns kept me interested. My sincere apologies must be extended to the first three display piles.

Arts report

I’ve been to a number of shows lately she here’s a little recap:

Dying to be Sick

Molière’s play about hypochondria translated by Adriene Clarkson. It was actually quite funny, the costumes were really neat and acting was nice.

Don Giovanni

Mozart’s opera about 18th century playboy. I’ve never seen it before and I’ve made a point of not reading up on the story before seeing it. I was very glad I didn’t because it was fun seeing it the first time without any idea how it will end. I had no idea the statue will show up for dinner. That was hilarious!

Nefés

Dance by Pina Bausch about Turkey. This was an excellent performance, full of humour and insight. I wish that it hadn’t been three hours long though. If about 15 to 30 minutes of less interesting segments were cut out, this would have been an absolutely brilliant performance.
