The Blues are Still Blue *

My weekend trip to Montreal turned out great as it was the right combination of good friends and fine music. Belle and Sebastian concert was fantastic and now I’ve only got Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on my ‘must see’ list.

I also got a chance to make up my mind on the latest Belle & Sebastian CD ‘The Life Pursuit’ so here it goes: Essentially it is same old – same old. While that means that it is in no way revolutionary or surprising, it is solid B&S and I can’t stop listening to it. I will have to pass it to Luisa before it burns a hole in my disk player (as I did with “Dear Catastrophe Waitress” before it).

Book – The English Patient

I’ve recently read “The English Patient” by Michael Ondaatje. Even though I really liked “In the skin of a lion” I can’t say the same thing about this one. I don’t mean to say anything bad about it. It is probably a good book. What this does show is that it is generally a good idea that I did not do a literature degree. I find that books either speak to me or don’t. This may or may not have anything to do with the quality of book. I can read a perfectly excellent book such as “Jane Eyre” and be annoyed at it. Or I can read strips on Spamusement and think it a poignant reflection of our times. But, let’s return to the “English Patient”. It is a romantic book. As such it set the mood and developed characters really well. I wish I could have enjoyed it more but my practical nature would not have allowed it.

The Wonders of Internet

It is always fun to find your face on the Internet when you least expect it. Here are some fun pictures from 2004 Linux Symposium closing party.

Linux Symposium 2004
Here is a picture of Chris and myself with our Linux pal Tony from Intel.

And another one with Werner from Argentina
Linux Symposium 2004
This picture is particularly funny because it was taken just before Werner found out how seriously we take ‘3:OOAM no more drinking’ laws. He neatly escaped forced repossession of his cuba libre by suddenly disappearing.

All these and more fun pictures are brought to you by our favourite Linux chick Julie.

Film – Mrs. Henderson Presents

If any nation can milk its brave history it is England. This has nothing to do with the movie, but I’ve read Jane Eyre recently and it was like – um… I need a slutty character for this point in my English self-congratulatory book. I’ll make her French! And then the wench’s daughter will move to England and improve her faulty character as result of fresh English air. Is there ever a piece of art that makes England look bad? Chris says thrhthrth!

Note: I don’t mean disrespect. I’m just jealous.

Olympics

I magically hurt my back earlier this week and was bedridden for over three days. From this incapacitated state I had nothing to do but read novels and watch the Olympics. I always preferred winter to summer Olympics, but have not watched much winter sports since I was young. Man, have things changed! I was amazed at women’s moguls event and we watched skeleton yesterday with our jaws pretty much glued to the floor. It is nice to have two countries to cheer on, it means more medals! Yay!
